Radmilo Marković addresses the problem of illegal disposal with waste motor oil in Serbia. Despite the fact that it is a highly hazardous substance, the oil is being ilegally sold and used to heat homes and workshops, causing air pollution and posing significant risks to the environment and human health. Although the government collects fees designated for its proper disposal, it lacks an effective system to manage the process and sufficient supervision of this waste. Therefore, large quantities of oil end up contaminating water, soil, or air. This problem also lies in the complexity of the legislation, high costs connected with legal disposal and the fact that thousands of illegal services operate without being under any control. The author highlights that without strong government commitment and investment in processing infrastructure, this problem will continue to threaten public health and environmental quality.
