Building the “Serbian World”: Serbia’s Impact on Security and Stability in the Western Balkans

About the project

The project supports democratic resilience and good governance in the Western Balkans by fostering regional cooperation and informed dialogue. In this context, the project addresses Serbia’s asymmetric and hybrid influence in the region and seeks to strengthen local resilience against such activities.

Through workshops, networking, fact-finding visits, and stakeholder meetings in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, local experts, civil society representatives, and policymakers will jointly explore the role of external influences in shaping governance and stability.

By connecting V4 partners with regional stakeholders, the project will produce locally grounded policy recommendations that contribute to democratic development and the EU integration process.

The project is funded by the International Visegrad Fund.

Building the “Serbian World”: Serbia’s Impact on Security and Stability in the Western Balkans

Od násilného rozpadu Jugoslávie hraje Srbsko klíčovou roli na Balkáně jako největší z postjugoslávských národních států. Během posledního desetiletí se současný srbský režim stal vlivným regionálním aktérem a využívá širokou škálu politických, informačních, ekonomických, kulturních a bezpečnostních nástrojů k formování své strategické pozice v regionu.

Building the “Serbian World”: Serbia’s Impact on Security and Stability in the Western Balkans

Since the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbia has played a pivotal role in the Balkans as the largest of the post-Yugoslav nation-states. Over the past decade, the current Serbian regime has become an influential regional actor, employing a wide range of political, informational, economic, cultural, and security-related instruments to shape its strategic position in the region. Increasingly, Serbian regional policy is framed through the political concept of the “Serbian World” (Srpski svet), which refers to the idea of maintaining a unified political, cultural, and informational space linking Serbia with Serb communities in neighbouring states.
