Conventional agriculture's reliance on synthetic fertilisers threatens the sustainability of food systems. With global demand for food rising and soil fertility declining, synthetic fertilisers are a key part of conventional agriculture to maintain yields, but they have negative environmental impacts and exacerbate Europe's dependence on imported agricultural inputs.
