Green Reconstruction of Ukraine

About the project

Over the past couple of months, the overall security situation of Ukraine did not improve but rather got more complicated under the pressure from Russia and its backers as well as the influence of Western fragmentation, polarization of Western societies and an overall fatigue from the war translated into some electoral results benefiting the anti-establishment parties around Europe and the wider West. Within this context, Ukraine’s reconstruction is perceived more and more through the prism of humanitarian needs or security and defence. Thus, the emphasis remains rather on preserving the very fundamentals of the country and its society and less on perceiving support of Ukraine as an investment into Europe’s future, including within enlargement and the sustainability perspective. Therefore, it is becoming harder to maintain the green component of work on Ukraine both at the national (incl. Czech) and the EU levels. In recent years, this can be demonstrated by the approach of the Czech President Petr Pavel who among his 11 points for Ukraine’s reconstruction (Marshall Plan for Ukraine) did not mention the green and sustainable component, unlike governance, anti-corruption and other pillars.
