Will Support for the Lithium Mine Alienate the EU from Serbian Citizens?
The continued support of Western countries for the Serbian government regarding the lithium mine in Jadar, while practically ignoring activists' warnings, could further erode citizens' trust in European integration. According to N1’s interlocutors, every misstep by the EU "created a vacuum, allowing Russians and Chinese to step in."
When it comes to large foreign investments in Serbia, there is often a combination of non-transparent procedures and legal loopholes exploited with the participation of Serbian authorities, who more frequently protect the interests of foreign companies over the public interest.
The Jadar project in Serbia, which Western countries support uncritically despite the potential risks highlighted by numerous experts, has sparked protests, open conflicts, and deep polarization within society and among politicians. Further support for the lithium mine project, particularly among parts of the public that view it as risky, could weaken support for European integration and bolster other foreign influences in the country.
