CHOICE Newsletter: Europe's Far-right Gains are Likely to Favor More China-friendly Votes

In this edition of the CHOICE newsletter, we discuss Europe's far-right gains in the European Parliament election and what it means for the EP's policymaking on China, and present our latest outputs.

In this weekend’s European Parliament elections, far-right parties across Europe saw notable gains. Marine Le Pen’s party outperformed expectations by increasing its seats from 23 to 30, prompting French President Macron to dissolve Parliament and schedule snap elections.

The Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) in Austria and the Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV) in the Netherlands, respectively, both finished first, securing 6 seats each and bolstering the Identity and Democracy (ID) group.

Despite being embroiled in multiple scandals, the German far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), increased its seat count from 11 to 15. This was amidst accusations of its MEP Bystron receiving funds from a Russian disinformation site and the arrest of MEP Krah’s assistant on suspicion of spying for China.
