AMO will present first results of the Virtual Insanity project at the International Day of Democracy in Brussels
The International Day of Democracy conference is an annual event that brings representatives from the international community together to share their experiences about protecting and building democracy worldwide.
In 2019, the International Day of Democracy conference focuses on a key issue in contemporary democracy discussions: Accountability.
AMO, being a part of the Virtual Insanity project, will present the first results of its research in the panel focusing on digital accountability, moreover, the social media platforms and digital political advertising:
The phenomenon of digital political campaigning has caught global public attention since the twin shocks of Brexit and the US Presidential election in 2016. This challenge was highlighted again by the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. Since then, the tension between the integrity of electoral systems and a vastly unregulated digital sphere have arguably become an inherent danger to democracies worldwide. Therefore, this workshop will look at accountability of social media platforms, and specifically digital political advertising, in Europe and beyond.
