The Association for International Affairs organized a public discussion on “Ukraine after Presidential Elections: Between EU and Russia”. As speakers participated Jurij Fedorov, Research fellow, Chatham House, Ondrej Soukup, who is a foreign desk reporter for Hospodarske noviny, Mychajlo Samus, Deputy director in Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies and Vaclav Nekvapil, Director AKVS and election observer for the second round of Presidential elections. Discussion was chaired by Tomas Sindelar, Association for International Affairs Executive Secretary.
Specialists reviewed the atmosphere before the presidential elections, commented the rivalry between Julija Tymošenko and Viktor Janukovyc and they also sketched out possible impacts of Junakovyc´s victory. Vaclav Nekvapil described elections as regular and the procedure as well mastered. He also compared elections with those, which took place five years ago. Speakers answered questions on cooperation with NATO, change of relationships with Russia, the issue of gas conduit or Russian Black sea fleet. Next months will show us where the first steps of Janukovyc´s career as a president of Ukraine are going to lead – to Moscow or to the EU?
