Relations between Russia and the West belong to the most crucial issues of international politics even at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. How should the West respond to the recent Russian moves that often directly contradict those of the Western countries? Is it actually appropriate to refer to the West as an indivisible entity when policies towards Russia have the tendency to rather divide than unite? What is the most appropriate policy towards an increasingly assertive Russia? Deterrence? Engagement? Containment? How, realistically, can we do better?
These and other questions were in the focus of the international roundtable seminar „Russia´s Challenge and the West´s Response“ that was jointly organized by the Association for International Affairs and the prestigious British think-tank Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).
No less then 15 experts from independent research institutes as well as from governmental sector took part in four sessions (Russian foreign and security policy; Neighborhood; Energy; West´s response) with active participation of diplomats, representatives of the MFAs from EU and NATO member countries, representatives of the Czech MFA and Czech expert community. The event was kindly supported by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the Polish Embassy in Prague and the British Embassy in Prague.
