Media Pillars of Democracy: A Series on European Public Broadcasters
zdroj: Demostat

With this series of articles, Demostat aims to raise citizens' awareness of the importance of the proper and lawful operation of public broadcasters, such as RTS, which are funded by the money of all Serbian citizens. Public broadcasters must not serve the interests of those in power but instead serve the public interest, as is the case in the developed democracies of Europe. Through an analysis of examples from these countries, we will show how public broadcasters can and should function as pillars of information and democracy.

In the first article of this series, we will provide an overview of public broadcasters across Europe, highlighting their significance, operational methods, editorial policies, and the oversight bodies responsible for monitoring their work. In subsequent installments, we will analyze each one in detail, exploring how they contribute to information, culture, and democracy in their respective countries.

The article by Tamara Bajčić was originaly published with the support of the project Enhancing the Capacities of Serbian Investigative Journalists in Mapping Foreign Influence in Serbia by Demostat. You can read the original version in Serbian here.
