What is “Salami Slicing,” and How Does It Relate to Chinese Companies Operating in Serbia?

While Serbia celebrates Chinese investments as a key to economic development, research by non-governmental organizations suggests that companies like "Linglong" and "Zijin" are avoiding compliance with environmental protection laws. Construction without permits, avoiding environmental impact assessments, and disregarding civil rights, as noted in analyses by the Regulatory Institute for Renewable Energy and Environment (RERI) and rulings by the Commercial Court in Zaječar and the Basic Court in Bor, raise serious questions about the true nature of this "strategic partnership."
Is the state truly investing in its future, or is it turning a blind eye to major investors, ignoring the consequences for public health and environmental preservation? Are institutions ready to uphold environmental standards and the rights of their citizens, or do they prioritize economic interests alone?
